Turning the Page: Transitioning Into September

Posted by Charlotte Nutland on
How are you feeling about September?

For some of us there’s something quietly magical about this month. The light softens, evenings draw in just a little earlier, and the rhythm of life begins to shift. If you're in this camp you're probably excited for routines and structure and things slowly returning to normal.

For others, we're worried about loosing the light, the warmth and missing the high energy of summer, holidays, social gatherings, long days, late nights.

September arrives like a gentle pause, inviting us to reset and there are small things we can do to embrace this changing season whether you're excited or nervous about these changes.

September is a month of transitions. Children return to school, routines reform, and many of us feel the pull towards fresh starts. There’s often a sense of possibility, as if the year is giving us a second chance to begin again. The air might feel cooler, but September brings with it the comfort of structure returning and the promise of cosy evenings ahead.

Here are some ideas to help transition slowly into September depending on which camp you're in:

If You’re Excited for September

  1. Refresh Your Routines
Use September as your “new year in disguise.” Revisit your daily habits, whether it’s meal planning, or carving out more time for movement or fun!

  2. Celebrate Seasonal Shifts
Start exploring the flavours of early autumn, think figs, blackberries, apples, and warming spices. It’s a delicious way to welcome the season and Blackberry picking season is in full swing.

  3. Create a Cosy Corner
Light a candle, add a soft blanket, and make yourself a reading nook or ritual space to enjoy as the evenings begin to draw in.

  4. Set Gentle Intentions
Write down 2–3 things you’d like to focus on this month, not goals for pressure, but intentions to guide you with calm clarity.

  5. Notice the Beauty
Go for evening walks with a friend and watch the first signs of autumn appear: a crispness in the air, a shift in light, a leaf turning golden.

If You’re Sad to Say Goodbye to Summer

  1. Carry Summer Forward
Bring a piece of summer with you, frame a holiday photo, keep fresh flowers on the table, or cook a favourite dish from your travels.

  2. Spend Time Outdoors
Soak up the light while it lasts. Long weekend walks, a coffee outside, or an evening stroll can keep that summer spirit alive.

  3. Plan Micro-Adventures
Even though summer holidays may be over, plan small things to look forward today trips, cosy dinners with friends, or a City break.

  4. What do you need?
What is it about Summer that makes you feel SO alive. How can you bring this specific feeling into Autumn. Write down what you loved about summer, and what you’d like to invite in this new season.

  5. Treat Yourself Gently
Change can be hard! Allow yourself little comforts: a slow morning, your favourite skincare ritual, or an uplifting playlist to ease the transition.
