Why wool is the unsung hero of summer sleep

This week we sat down with Sophie, Founder of beautiful natural bedding brand Floks, based in Yorkshire to chat all things wool.
Why wool is the unsung hero of summer sleep
Wool doesn’t usually come to mind when we think of summer. It’s often associated with thick jumpers, chilly nights, and cosy firesides. But in the world of sleep, wool quietly does something remarkable—especially in warmer months.
I came to wool not just as a material, but as a solution. I was looking for something natural, something that worked with the body, not against it. What I found was a fibre that’s been working in harmony with nature—and us—for centuries.
A natural regulator
One of wool’s quiet superpowers is its ability to regulate temperature. It doesn’t just keep you warm; it keeps you balanced. When it’s hot, wool draws moisture away from the body and releases it into the air. When the temperature drops, it insulates gently. The result? A more stable sleeping environment, even when the nights are sticky or unpredictable.
Breathable, not Sweaty
Wool breathes in a way many modern materials simply can’t. That breathability means your body can do what it’s supposed to do at night: rest, repair, and reset. No overheating. No clammy sheets. Just a more comfortable kind of sleep.
Naturally calmer air
For anyone who suffers with hayfever or seasonal sensitivities, wool brings an unexpected benefit. It’s naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, mould, and bacteria. Wool fibres even help to absorb and lock away airborne toxins, gently purifying the air around you while you sleep. It’s a small, invisible comfort that can make a big difference to how you feel in the morning.
Not just the filling
At Floks, we think of every layer of your bed as an opportunity to sleep better. That’s why our bed linen is made from a blend of organic cotton and natural hemp—two beautifully breathable, durable fibres that feel soft on the skin and perform exceptionally through warm weather. Together with our wool-filled bedding, they create a gentle, natural sleep environment that truly supports you.
Why we chose wool at Floks
We set out to try and ensure everyone could experience better sleep with nature at the centre. For us, that meant working with materials that truly support the body and the planet. Wool felt like a quiet kind of wisdom - natural, renewable, and incredibly functional. Paired with organic cotton and hemp, it forms the foundation of everything we create. Not because it’s fashionable, but because it simply works.
Rethinking summer sleep
If you’ve ever woken in the middle of a hot night, tangled in synthetic or down bedding, feeling restless and damp, you’ll know just how important the right materials are. Summer sleep doesn’t have to be light in quality, it can be deep, restorative, and cool. Wool helps make that possible.
As ever, it’s about slowing down, choosing consciously, and letting nature do what it does best.
Sleep well,
Sophie
